The History of the Johnnie, Mime, and
Miles Swanson Awards
The Johnnies were started by Tod Engle, Vice-President 1978-1979, and Alexandra Shepard President 1978-1979 (for whom the infamous scaffold is named), in the spring of 1978. The first Johnnie winner was Nick Tullo. The President and Vice President of the Mimes were the co-hosts of the Johnnies for the first decade or so. Later on, the awards were hosted by the Presidents of the Mimes and FET. The awards, some serious and some not so serious, we're intended to celebrate the accomplishments of the Mimes' season. In fact, M&M candies were often given away as part of the less serious awards. All graduating seniors were given an "Oscar" type statuette dubbed a Johnnie Award. In addition to the individual Johnnie awards given to each graduating senior, there was an individual Johnnie Award intended for the "unsung hero" of the Mimes. It was awarded to the graduation senior who might not have done every show, but who could always be counted on to go that extra mile when they were involved. The individual Johnnie Award was renamed the Mime Award in the late 1990's. Around this time, the Miles Swanson Award came into existence. This award was named after Miles Swanson FCRH '01. He did lighting for every single show during his four years at Fordham. The group relied on Miles enormously, as he was the only person who was able to figure out the lighting board. The award was first given in 2001. Regardless of the titles of the individual awards, the Johnnie Award Ceremony lives on each spring. Please help us fill in the gaps! We have done out best to accurately represent the names of the recipients, please let us know if we have made an error. Contact LauraBC@mimesalums.org with additions/corrections.
